BIOGRAPHY

Sam Nerenberg is a postdoctoral research associate at the Extreme Light Group. Dr. Nerenberg’s work at XLight lies at the intersection of quantum optics, neural imaging, and machine learning. He is developing novel methods image inside the brain by transmitting pulses of light through it and in addition, he is studying how quantum states of light may yield advantages in biomedical imaging and neuromorphic computing.

He earned his B.S. in optical engineering and M.S. and PhD. degrees in optical sciences from the College of Optical Sciences at The University of Arizona where he was the 2014-2015 Willis Lamb Jr. Scholar and the 2018-2019 Outstanding Graduate Student. His doctoral research was on the experimental study of quantum turbulence in atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates and was supervised by Prof. Brian P. Anderson. During his time in Prof. Anderson’s lab, he developed of novel methods of generation and characterization of vortex states in these ultra-cold atomic gasses.
