Before I started my PhD a group from
Glasgow University took our Arcs and Sparks Show to the Orkney Science
Festival.
During my PhD I have been
fortunate enough to visit many places, either for conferences or on
holiday.
In May 2004 I attended a
summer school at the VIRGO dectector site near Pisa, Italy. The picture
at the top of this page is made up of 10 individual photographs I took
to make a 350 degree panoramic image of the VIRGO gravitational wave
detector site in Italy. The full sized image is over 42 mega pixels and
is over 7 metres wide!
Then, in June I went to
France for a week and went to Paris, Cannes, Monaco and Nice. Prince
Albert of Monaco has a large collection of old cars that is open to the
public.
In July we had a Research
and Development Meeting with some of our collaborators at the
Max-Planck Institut in Hannover. I also went for a visit to the GEO600
Gravitational Wave Detector.
PPARC each year hold a
summer school for postgraduate students to attend. I attended one held
at the University of Leicester in September 2004, which included a trip
to the National Space Centre.
In March 2005 I took my
turn on shifts at the GEO600 Detector in Germany as past of the S4 Data
run.
