Manufacture of Mechanical Parts

IGR Procedure for having Mechanical Parts Manufactured

Basic Procedure:

Diagram of Manufacturing Procedure

Background Notes:

There are several resources we have for the manufacture of mechanical parts:

1) Departmental workshop
2) IGR technicians - Colin Craig and Stevie Craig
3) External workshops (Mechanical Engineering department workshop / various commercial outfits)

The departmental workshop and external workshops are the resources that we use when parts and assemblies are required of a significant precision or quantity. When simpler parts such as plates with clear or tapped holes, turned parts or minor remachining work is required, Colin and Stevie are available to undertake this kind of work. We have recently benefited from Stevie Craig getting some access to the departmental workshop machines however this is on an ad hoc basis and he cannot guarantee to get access to these machines - when the workshop is busy he cannot use these machines!

Russell Jones and I (both Room 456) are in charge of overseeing all manufacturing work for the group and distributing the work evenly amongst our resources such that the parts will be manufactured in an efficient manner. All manufacturing jobs for the group (with the exception of minor re-machining work) should be passed by us prior to manufacture. We ask this to help ensure of a number of things:

i) Work is distributed evenly so that a single resource is not overloaded
ii) We can check that all of the required information is present on the drawings (drawings should be of a sufficient standard that parts are made right first time!)
iii) We can give a realistic estimate for the manufacture time of the parts, based on all work the group has underway.
iv) We can add the job to the IGR Job Tracker so that everyone can see work we have on where.

To see the number of IGR jobs currently under manufacture, and for the future reference, you can check the IGR Job Tracker, which is linked from the IGR webpage.

It is important that everyone understands that the manufacture of mechanical parts can take a considerable amount of time. When a job is submitted material must be sourced; machine set-up; re-set-up for machining from different faces; finishing.  With this in mind, an assembly of several unique parts can easily take 3 or more weeks of one technician's time to create!
