Graduates AFC
Glasgow
University Graduates Football Club was formed following the
disbandment of the
Glasgow University Football Club 3rd XI. The
creation of a University under-21 side
at the end of season 2003-04, resulted in
the
announcement that the University 3rd and 5th XI would no longer be
supported financially by the University. This just a year after the
cancellation of the University 4th XI to make way for a new under-19
team left a number of senior students and staff players without a
team.
With interest high amongst players from the previous years 3rd team and players who had recently stopped playing University football, Chris Easton set about making the necessary arrangements to enter the team as a Graduate club. Through the hard work of Chris and with help from Ross Smith, Andy McMullan and Russell Jones, pitches were located, membership money collected (to re-enter the team in the league) and sponsorship deals were struck to provide strips for the season. The Glasgow University Graduates first match was played on Wednesday 25th August 2004 versus Govan High. Glasgow University Graduates Football Club is now a fully independent club which continues to play in the West of Scotland Amateur Football League. The squad is predominantly made up of Glasgow Graduates and current University staff members. The club continues its affiliation with the University football club and also with the existing Glasgow University graduate football club, Westerlands AFC. 2010-present Westerlands GGs AFC At the end of season 2009-2010 it was agreed at the Glasgow Graduates AGM that an approach should be made to our colleagues at Westerlands AFC with a view to joining up the teams and returning to the status of having one large Glasgow University Graduates Club. Combining the teams would allow for efficiency savings by way of combining team training slots and allowing for training with a greater number of players. Aside from that though, the club was to continue as a semi-independent body with its own sub-committee and with its home games continuing to take place at Glasgow Green Football Centre. Following the agreement at the Westerlands AFC AGM to become a 3rd XI, and with the consent of the West of Scotland AFL, Glasgow Graduates AFC was reborn as Westerlands GGs AFC. |
