STATUS Preliminary version by JCM after watching JRMA testing it 24/1/02.

JRMA approved 24/1/02.

COPYING data files to DLT TAPE.

On piptof1 cd to the directory where the data is usually

/scratch1/piptof/data

Put tape in DLT drive, and wait until it loads UPPER LED display on tape drive (Series 2300 box) should show a number indicating tape capacity eg 35000 means 35Gb.

IF TAPE ALREADY HAS DATA ON IT, which you do not want to overwrite, on piptof1 do

mt eod

to get to end of data. WAIT until it does. Check how big the files are eg. with ls -lh, and how much space is left on the tape - upper LED display on DLT drive.eg. 34107 means 34.1 Gb available on the tape.

mt status

can be used to check where the tape is - if it tells you 'File number = 9' it is at the end of the 9th file.

To copy file PiPTOF_n (where n is the run number) to tape on piptof1 do

tcopy n

To copy a range of files PiPTOF_n1 to PiPTOF_n2 do

tcopy n1 n2

(It will copy all files it finds in the range n1 to n2 even if they are not all present.)

To take out the tape do

mt offline

and WAIT until the drive invites you to open the handle.

Put a paper label on the tape and write protect it, unless you want to add more to it. The labelling scheme is PTGn, PTTn, PTEn, for Glasgow, Tuebingen and Edinburgh copies, where n is the sequence number starting at 0001. But for now, as we only have one working tape drive, it is better to make only one tape.

RECORD WHAT YOU DID IN (the back of) THE RUN LOG book preferably in the special sheet at the back of the book.
